Background of the Study
Integrating students with disabilities into school sports is a critical aspect of inclusive education that promotes physical, social, and psychological well-being. In Damaturu, where cultural and infrastructural challenges prevail, the integration of students with disabilities into school sports programs remains a significant concern. This study explores the multifaceted challenges that hinder full participation by students with disabilities, examining factors such as accessibility, teacher preparedness, and societal attitudes. Recent research has highlighted that inclusive sports programs not only benefit students with disabilities but also foster an environment of mutual respect and empathy among all students (Suleiman, 2023). Despite these recognized benefits, schools in Damaturu struggle with adapting existing facilities to accommodate students with special needs. The lack of specialized equipment and trained personnel often results in exclusionary practices, where students with disabilities are either sidelined or not provided with opportunities to participate fully in school sports (Taiwo, 2024). Furthermore, cultural perceptions and stigmatization of disability further complicate the integration process, as many communities harbor misconceptions about the capabilities of these students. The background of this study also considers the role of government policies and school administration in promoting or hindering inclusive practices. While policies on inclusive education exist, their implementation is often marred by resource constraints and inadequate monitoring. The research will examine how these systemic issues translate into practical challenges in schools, impacting both the quality of sports programs and the overall educational experience of students with disabilities. It will also explore the potential benefits of successful integration, such as improved self-esteem, enhanced social skills, and greater academic engagement among participating students. By drawing on both quantitative and qualitative data, the study seeks to provide a comprehensive analysis of the challenges and opportunities associated with integrating students with disabilities into school sports in Damaturu, ultimately aiming to offer recommendations for more inclusive educational practices (Umar, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Despite policy initiatives aimed at inclusive education, schools in Damaturu face significant obstacles in integrating students with disabilities into sports programs. The primary problem is the insufficient adaptation of sports facilities and the lack of specialized training for educators, which results in environments that are not conducive to the active participation of students with disabilities (Yakubu, 2023). Many schools have not modified their infrastructure to accommodate wheelchairs or other assistive devices, and the absence of adaptive sports equipment limits the range of activities available to these students. Furthermore, there is a prevalent cultural bias that perceives students with disabilities as less capable of participating in competitive sports, which contributes to their marginalization. Teachers often express uncertainty about how to modify games and sports activities to include all students, leading to inconsistent practices and underutilization of available resources (Zubair, 2024). Additionally, the lack of collaboration between school administrators, parents, and community organizations exacerbates the problem, as there is insufficient advocacy for necessary changes. These barriers not only reduce the opportunities for physical activity among students with disabilities but also negatively impact their self-esteem and social integration. The study aims to investigate these issues in detail, identifying the critical factors that impede the inclusion of students with disabilities in school sports. By addressing these challenges, the research seeks to propose targeted strategies that will enable schools to provide a more inclusive sports program, thereby enhancing the overall educational experience and promoting equal opportunities for all students (Abdul, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the challenges in integrating students with disabilities into school sports programs.

  2. To assess the impact of infrastructural and cultural barriers on inclusion.

  3. To propose strategies for creating more inclusive sports environments in schools.

Research Questions

  1. What are the major challenges in integrating students with disabilities into school sports?

  2. How do infrastructural limitations affect the participation of students with disabilities?

  3. What measures can be implemented to overcome cultural and systemic barriers?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Inadequate sports facilities significantly hinder the integration of students with disabilities.

  2. Cultural stigmatization is inversely related to the inclusion of students with disabilities in school sports.

  3. Targeted interventions can improve the integration and participation rates of students with disabilities.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it sheds light on the challenges faced by schools in Damaturu in integrating students with disabilities into sports programs. The findings will inform educational policymakers and school administrators about critical infrastructural and cultural barriers, and offer evidence-based recommendations for creating more inclusive environments. By addressing these issues, the study aims to enhance the educational and social outcomes for students with disabilities, contributing to a more equitable and supportive school system (Bello, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to schools in Damaturu Local Government Area and focuses exclusively on the integration of students with disabilities into school sports. It does not address other extracurricular activities or regions. Data collection is confined to selected schools, and findings may not be representative of all educational institutions.
